In this recording, you can hear how screwed-up my voice is from singing four (4) hours a day (and sometimes more) everyday (with the odd exception) for six (6) months straight. YIKES! That's just TOO MUCH singing for ANYBODY! Human vocal chords are NOT designed to withstand such demands, but that's life as a Musical Entertainer working onboard a Cruise-Ship. I just tried using that sore throat & tired voice to my own advantage for this particular song, by doing an impression of the great Louis Armstrong's raspy voice.
This classic song is always a popular request from people who are on a Cruise vacation & seeing different parts of our spectacular planet. There really is something exciting about waking-up each morning in a place which is different than where you had fallen asleep just the night before!
In fact, each morning after we had arrived in a new port, I made a conscious effort of making it my routine to start the day by wandering up to an outside deck with a coffee before leaving the ship, not only to just soak-up the inevitable magnificent beauty of whichever exotic location where we happened to be on that day, but also with the specific intent of surveying the area I was about to explore. When leaving the ship, I always then allowed my intuition to lead me towards wherever I felt drawn to by that initial survey from my previous vantage-point onboard the ship, while enjoying my morning coffee. That routine never let me down, & resulted in countless adventures & discoveries which I could have never planned on.
I was usually by myself during the vast majority of those adventures which I embarked upon, simply because the regular routine for most of the ship's working crew (on any given ‘port-day’) was to quickly find a place on land with a good enough & relatively cheap internet connection, so that they could connect with their family & friends within the very limited time they had available. Although completely understandable, I always thought it was such a shame for them to not be able to take full advantage of the spectacular sights & culture of each location during the short time while we were there. I'm only able to say that with full acknowledgement that I was very fortunate to have much more time available than most of the hard-working crew members, plus also having my family & friends always encouraging me to soak-up the unbelievable journey I was on.
Earlier in the day when the audio track for this song was recorded, I had been to Hell & back: Literally! There is a small village called “Hell” on Grand Cayman Island where I simply had to visit, just to say I’d been to Hell & back …LOL! While I was there, I happened to see a dear friend of mine from the ship (Gerry: The keyboard player from the ship’s band ‘Captain Boom’), who was also visiting Hell for the same reason. In addition to being a fine Musician, Gerry is also a geologist, while I’ve always had a keen interest in rocks, and there are really interesting rock formations in Hell which we admired together. Even though we hadn’t planned it; I guess it should be no surprise that we crossed paths there while both being drawn to that same location for similar reasons.
This song was recorded in the Caribbean Sea, somewhere between Montego Bay, Jamaica and Grand Cayman Island, onboard the Royal Caribbean Cruise-Ship: 'SPLENDOUR of The Seas', where I performed in the 'Schooner Bar' nightly for 6 months (with the VERY OCCASIONAL day off).
