A few days before we were due to dock in Montego Bay, Jamaica, I learned that one of Jimmy Buffett’s famous ‘Margaritaville’ Bars was located there, and so my mission for that day became obvious: Clearly… this was my chance to visit one of the many ‘J.B.’ shrines and enjoy a ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’, as the man himself wrote & sang about in his hit song of the same name.
I wasted no time exiting the ship & finding a taxi-cab shortly after we had docked that morning, to make sure I had enough time to soak-up a few sights & experience a sample of the local culture before finally arriving at ‘Margaritaville - Montego Bay’ right around 12:00 noon-ish: Making sure to arrive with my appetite in good time for lunch.
Upon my arrival there (and much to my surprise), the place was absolutely rockin’ already at that time of day. A very loud crowd with pumpin’ music could easily be heard from outside as I pulled-up in my taxi-cab. YIKES! Perhaps I may have bitten-off more than I was prepared for. As it turned out though, all was great fun there as the vast majority of Patrons were tourists from the ship, most of whom were already half-drunk by then. I guess that my plan wasn’t very original, as half the ship seemed to have (apparently) had the same idea.
While Karaoke & big screens were busy happening, another popular choice of entertainment included water-slides from inside the Bar into the ocean outside of this beach-side location. All of this action really caught me by surprise, as I really had absolutely no clue about what to expect in ‘Maragaritaville’. WOW! What a buzz! There was certainly A LOT going on!
I was also pleasantly surprised by the great selection of food on the menu, but had already decided on what I had come for: “A cheeseburger & a pint of your local brew please”. After I’d had my fill, I made my way back to my cabin for an afternoon nap, just to ensure that I was ready for my evening’s performance in the ‘Schooner Bar’ onboard the ship.
On subsequent visits to Jamaica, I was lucky enough to also see Ocho Rios, and then again on different ships ('LIBERTY' & ‘OASIS’) when I would visit Falmouth as well. All-in-all: Jamaica has been very very good to me mon :-) Wagwan. Irie.
NOTE: This song was recorded onboard Royal Caribbean’s ‘SPLENDOUR of the Seas’, somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico after leaving our home-port of Galveston, Texas USA, on our way to Montego Bay, Jamaica.
